Barriers -- A Community Art Installation

7/18/2016 3 Comments

Barriers is a community art installation. The "canvas" will be a chain link construction fence in Newhall. The "paint" is colored flagging tape, upon which community members of all ages are sharing stories and reflections. The piece, conceived by local artist, Diana Kado, asks us to think about the various kinds of barriers we have encountered in our lives -- what are the social-political restrictions, economic hardships, cultural differences, psychological hang ups, health issues, physical limitations, relationship problems, and situational challenges to our goals and dreams? What different things do we see as barriers? How do they alter our lives? Have they changed who we are? Have we been able to overcome them or learned to accommodate them?

We began collecting stories a few weeks ago at the Newhall Farmer's Market and will continue the project throughout the month. As we progress over the next couple of weeks, we'll use this forum to share the comments and reflections. Feel free to respond, especially if you have dealt with similar barrier in your own life.

A community member requested that I share the following instructions that was presented to the participants during the collection of narratives about barriers at the various community events:

BARRIERS
a community art project moderated by forge ahead arts
and conceived by Diana Kado

A fence is a barrier. It is often included in the dictionary definition of a “barrier.” However, there are many other kinds of barriers such as:

• language barriers
• social-political restrictions
• economic hardships
• cultural differences
• psychological hang ups
• health issues
• physical limitations
• relationship problems
• situational challenges to our goals and dreams.

You are invited to think about the following questions and then write your answer(s) on orange-red, yellow, or green flagging tape.

What different things do you see as barriers?
What barrier did/do you have in your life?
How does/did it alter your life?
How has it affected you?
What have you done about it?
Has it changed who you are?
Have you been able to overcome it or have you learned to accommodate it?
How do you feel about it?

Please choose to write your story on:

• orange-red tape if the barrier, obstacle, or limitation in your life upsets you, is consuming, or if it something that you’re having trouble overcoming;

• yellow tape if you feel the barrier, obstacle, or limitation in your life may have slowed you down, but is manageable, or it has occurred in the past and you are no longer as upset about it as you once were;

• green tape if the barrier, obstacle, or limitation in your life became a blessing in disguise, you have overcome it, or you have come to peace with it.

By participating in this project, you are agreeing to have your responses read by the public once it is installed on the fence. Responses will be anonymous unless you choose otherwise and will be posted on our website www.facebook.com/forgeaheadarts.

Current Barriers:
Overcoming my self inflicted broken heart. I am not honoring myself enough to take the right actions that allow me peace, health and joy.

In progress:
I am always learning what my boundaries are and how to set them.

Overcome:
I have overcome my fear of being fat and ugly by not judging any of you.

(Detoxing from mainstream entertainment ie: tv, radio, magazines, etc. helps too.)

Thanks for sharing. We'd like this project to continue and to possibly recur again but for now keeping it going online is important.
